10th Grade Media Studies

Self-Portrait Project
Self-portraiture is a vital process in the development of consciousness. Historically, the emergence of self-portraiture mirrors the emergence of the social significance of individual identity. To re-present oneself through a medium, representational or not, is defining. Symbolism and metaphor are as important tools as any mirror in this process. Use all means at your disposal for the creation of your self-portrait/narrative. The final product of this project will be a single image/series printed using darkroom techniques. This does not mean that your self-portrait needs to be a traditional photograph. Digital strategies may be use to create your desired effect. You will also produce an artist statement to accompany your self-portrait articulating your piece. Remember that self-portraiture is less about expression and more about discovery.
